Seattle or San Francisco?

Seattle Portrait and Commercial Photographer weighs in.

Recently I was asked to weigh in on the Seattle or San Francisco debate: “Which is the best place to live?”

This was an interesting question to consider since I just recently moved to Seattle myself! Obviously I chose Seattle, so what is it about the city?

If I’m completely honest with you - part of our move was to be closer to grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins for our kiddos. So there is that. But even if that weren’t a part of our decision to move from my beloved NYC - I’d choose Seattle over many other places I’ve visited in the U.S.

Here is my actual quote for the article, which sums it up pretty well:

“One of my favorite things about Seattle is the blend of city life and nature.  After years in NYC, I was drawn back here for that connection to the outdoors. As a portrait photographer, it’s a dream – the variety of locations are endless. One day, you’re shooting with a breathtaking view of Mt. Rainier from a mountain road, and the next, you're enjoying a drink in a trendy, buzzing speakeasy in the heart of the city.” – Alexis Wolfe Mbassa of Alexis Wolfe Photography, a music and commercial portrait photography studio.

San Francisco has a lot of that as well. What I know from San Francisco is from quick visits to the Bay Area to see extended family or to tour with Digital Underground back in the day. I’ve loved it there as well. Yet, I grew up in Seattle and have a nostalgic soft-spot for it.

Returning to Seattle after years in NYC has really allowed me to appreciate what the city has to offer. It’s incredibly stunning (especially on days when the overcast clouds and spit-drizzly rain passes). There are days where I have to pull over my car and snap pictures or just take in the view capturing snow-capped mountains, rich green evergreens, deep navy waves splashing onto the rocks and the glistening city in the background. I worried that I would miss the excitement, energy, and bustle of NYC, and there are times I do, but for the most part Seattle has everything and more than I imagined before moving back. We found ourselves settled into West Seattle, “The rock ‘n’ roll capital of Seattle”. I wouldn’t want to be based anywhere else.
