Why hire a professional music photographer?
Music Photography | Seattle Music Photographer | Professional Photography
I’m sure you’ve heard the expression, “A photograph is worth 1000 words”, I think of music portraits as being basically that: A visual representation of the musicians’ sound. It may be the first thing that a potential fan or promoter will respond to. You want them to see your image and get a sense of your style and sound, have a sense of who you are. That image should draw them in to your world. That snapshot from the greenroom last night probably won’t cut it. Even if your style is laid-back, casual, and you like the snap-shot feel. A pro can capture that same look in a way that still looks like you care about your craft and captures attention.
Professional images usually mean professional musician. The quality of your images should represent how you want to be seen. You’ll want them to show that you are a serious musician/artist/performer. You aren’t just fooling around in your friend’s living room. If you want to be taken seriously, professional photographs show that you take yourself seriously first.
Create your brand and draw your audience in. The visuals you use on your websites, social media, for press releases, and flyers should all have a consistent feel and capture the attention of your audience as much as your music does.
Think of the image of Prince on his Hondamatic Motorcycle for “Purple Rain” surrounded by night steam. Or the iconic image of Jay Z with his tilted hat, white scarf, and cigar. D-Nice with his recognizable hat. Whether you’re a fan or not, think of the consistent styles of: Beyonce, Amy Winehouse, Jimi Hendrix, BTS, The Weeknd… They all have a brand.
Building your brand matters. High-quality images matter. As a creative you are gifted with a talent and you’ve dedicated yourself to do what you love. That is an amazing thing. Not everyone chooses this path and we are all grateful for the entertainers and musicians who have made a difference in our lives.
When you are up and coming, it can be difficult to know where, when, and how much to invest in yourself. Quality visuals are a huge piece of the musician puzzle that is well worth the investment. Research photographers and get to know their work. Like tattoo artists, we are creatives as well, and we each have a unique style and a method of our own. Ask questions to see if you are a good match. When you have found the right match - SCHEDULE THAT SHOOT!!! It will be one of the best ways you can grow and invest in yourself as an artist.
